Ways to Celebrate at Home

1. 1. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
  2. Unplug rechargeable devices such as cell phone chargers, digital cameras, etc., even though these devices are in standby mode.
  3. Plug TVs, DVD players, electronics, and computer equipment into power strips and turn off at night or when you leave to avoid the phantom/vampire power that is constantly lost. Also, screen savers fo NOT reduce energy use by monitors – switching to sleep mode or manually turning off monitors is always the better energy-saving strategy.
  4. Switch out incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent (CFLs) which us 75% less energy or light emitting diodes (LEDs) which use 90% less energy.
  5. Open the windows for some fresh air when the weather is pleasant instead of running the mechanical heating or cooling system – better for your health too.
  6. Turn off the energy-hogging heated dry cycle on your dishwasher.
  7. Walk or bike to where you need to go. Or just to enjoy the outdoors. Pick up trash while you are at it.
  8. Do you really need to print that document? If so use back side of scratch paper or double side you printing.
  9. Bring that reusable coffee mug and water bottle instead of throwing away one each time.
  10. Celebrate green reads via a display of books or online web site of resources and sustainable information.

We know that the holidays are a time to bring everyone together and celebrate our time together. But this year has certainly turned out differently than what we all might have expected. We know most are celebrating differently this year. With keeping one another safe as a top priority this holiday season, we wanted to share how we are celebrating this year and how we are keeping our traditions but doing so safely.

Each year around Christmas we usually get all of our family to visit us, and the chaos involved is usually half the fun of the holidays. We host a big Christmas party, go to a candlelight vigil each Christmas Eve, and then go up to our family’s cabin to enjoy New Years Eve. Its a time I have always looked forward to each year.

This year it’s just my immediate family. We won’t have a big party, have family over, go out anywhere or leave our home. Instead, we are doing a lot of socially distanced celebrating. More Zoom calls, safe movie nights, and dropping off food to those who can’t be with anyone this holiday season. The holidays are more about the people you spend it with and after the year we had I really look forward to just being with them.

It's a Wonderful Life

Every Year, my mom and i watch this movie while we wrap presents. Its her favorite movie and it has become my favorite as well. While we can’t be cuddled up on the couch and watch it, we are planning on doing a socially distance movie night while still wrapping up some gifts.

Shopping Small

Instead of department brands and going shopping at malls, I am shopping mostly online on stores like Etsy that provide personalized items and come from small businesses. I have been getting some great gifts that i can’t wait for my family to open on Christmas!

Zoom Parties

We usually have a big party every year. Instead, we are doing a zoom party. The people who are getting a plate of some party snacks we would have provided so when we zoom we could all be having the same food and drink we might be at a party. It’s going to be a great time!

Normally around this time my family would celebrate the Day of the Virgin Mary on the 12th of December. We would attend church around 8 for a two hour mass. We would also get to see the traditional aztec dancers. Since we cant do that this year it is most likely that we will be doing a small evening prayer with my immediate family instead.

My family also celebrates Christmas eve and Christmas day. This use to mean my family would take out the pans and start making tamales in preparation for a big party with my entire extended family on Christmas eve. Usually we would make tamales and bunuelos while others would make Posole, arroz con leche and empanadas. So basically everybody would come together with a whole bunch of food. This year we are still making tamales but we are only making for my immediate family. This is the first year that everyone is doing their own thing. The last thing we would do is wait till midnight and open presents one by one in front of each other. This literally would take 2 to 3 hours on average. Now its going to take all of two seconds with only my immediate family haha.

Bunuelos

Bunuelos are fried fritters and are delicious. There are no words to describe how good these are – especially with a LOT of sugar.

Posole

Pozole is a traditional soup or stew from Mexican cuisine. This one is made from chicken and is sure to be a hit at any table.

Empanadas

Not all Empanadas are filled with meat! This recipe has pumpkin and They are SO GOOD. I can’t wait to make these.

I enjoy the holidays mainly because of the food and fun activities that I get to do with friends and family. Since I work at a school, I get a week (or two) off, so it is a time of relaxation as well as a celebration. Usually I celebrate the holidays with Las Posadas, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day festivities. Though this year will be different.

I still plan on making our traditional tamales with my parents and have a small family meal with them for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and of course exchanging gifts. I will also do a lot of virtual “meetings” with my cousins and friends since we usually get together during this time. I have recommended some places to get Tamales and some virtual games that will make it a great experience.

Tamales

If you do not have time to make Tamales, you can always buy them! There’s a ton of places in Los Angeles area to order Tamales, especially during this time. I have listed a few of my favorites that I have tried myself.

Houseparty

Houseparty is the face-to-face social network where you can connect with the people. The app makes video chat effortless, alerting you when your friends are “in the house” and ready to chat so you can jump right into the conversation. Plus you can play games that you and your party can enjoy! I love playing the Pictionary Game on the app. It is totally free, you just need a smart phone/tablet or download it to your desktop using the Google Chrome extension.

Quiplash

Quiplash is a gut-busting battle of wits and wittiness! Just use your phone, tablet, or desktop (no controllers needed) to answer simple prompts, think of Cards Against Humanity, but online! It is pretty funny to hear people’s typed-in responses. Whoever has the most votes is claimed the winner!

This month instead of Book or Movie recommendations, we in the Library thought you might enjoy some recipes that never fail in warming our spirits. We know this year is tough, but we also have some options on how you can spend time with your friends and family without leaving the comfort of your own home.

I usually return home for the holidays. Instead of having my mom’s cooking, I decided to try some of her recipes at home and boy, they didn’t disappoint! While I won’t share all of her recipes here (She wouldn’t be happy about that!) I do have a couple of my favorite that I love to bring to potlucks and am happy to share the recipe for!

I know how hard it is to be away from those you care about during the holidays. Setting up a virtual game online can be easy and a great way to still have fun with your family, without the risk.

Butternut Squash Brownies

Don’t let the title fool you! These brownies are delicious, easy to make (only 6 ingredients!) and are a crowd favorite. They can also be made to be completely vegan! These are a crowd pleaser and even the pickiest of eaters have no idea they are having a healthy alternative to a classic dessert. This recipes calls for a particular nut butter, but any type of nut butter is fine and tastes just as good!

Pomegranat Salad

Pomegranates are my favorite fruit, and I always am excited when their season comes around! This salad is fresh and delicious, and doesn’t require a lot of fuss. If you enjoy a little crunch in your salad and are feeling adventurous, try this one!

Virtual Games (Among Us)

Among Us is a perfect way to play with family and friends virtually this year! This game can have up to 10 people playing all at once, so all your family can join! Enjoy a great ‘who dun it’ game all from the safety of your own home.

Although I have never really celebrated thanksgiving, I do think having a day to unwind and be grateful for the people in our lives is something good to celebrate. If bomb food is included then its even better!!! Here are some delicious foods you all can check out and maybe even incorporate in your own thanksgiving!

Champurrado

Champurrado is a traditional thick chocolate beverage that I think is amazing to have during the winter. You can also add many ingredients to champurrado depending on how you like it. Vanilla , Cinnamon and nuts are some you can add.

Arroz con Leche

Arroz con Leche is made from rice, water and milk and is very simple to make and tastes amazing (in my opinion)

Enchiladas

enchiladas is a tortilla with sauce you can add meat, cheese, beans, potatoes and vegetables to. You can make the sauce yourself or you can also buy it at the store lol. My fav are home made red enchiladas con longaniza although I also really like green enchiladas to. The great thing is that you can mix it up with the type of things you like.

Thanksgiving Day is our annual holiday celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. In addition, it is also a reminder of the democide and continued suffering of the Native American peoples. We should be healing the wounds by spreading peace and joy to all people and helping the less fortunate in any way, shape, or form, especially during this time.

I know this year has been a rough one for all of us, but I will be making food for my family, playing some online games with friends, and donating to some local charities since many people are struggling during this time. Below are some of my favorite recipes and games I thought you might enjoy spending with your loved ones!

Matcha Latte

Matcha helps boost energy as well provides many health benefits including high in antioxidants and helps protects against infections. Sit back and drink green!

Vegan Lentil Nut 'Meatloaf

Lentils are a great source of protein and they are easy to make! Since I enjoy eating plant-based foods, I thought of an alternative recipe that you might enjoy instead of the traditional turkey. I say this is a ‘happy’ turkey.

Caesar Salad with BBQ Sweet Potato Croutons

Salads can be very boring, (which I frankly don’t mind) but if you need a new way to eat salads, then just add sweet potatoes! Sweet potatoes are highly nutritious and promote gut health, plus they are very fulfilling. Try the recipe!

Alfred Hitchcock directed this classic suspense tale–widely considered one of the master’s best works–tapping into the evil that lies hidden just beneath the surface of each of us. When two strangers–tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger), whose wife will not grant him a divorce, and wealthy but deranged young Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), who wants to be rid of his father–happen to meet on a train from Washington to New York, the conversation casually turns to a possibly perfect crime: what if each committed murder for the other? There is nothing to connect the two men. No apparent motive for either killing.

When the trip ends, Guy believes the conversation was hypothetical, and that he will never see Bruno again. Then his wife is murdered . . . and Bruno returns for payback. Hard-boiled crime novelist Raymond Chandler co-wrote the screenplay of this film adaptation of the novel by Patricia Highsmith.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

Every Year, my mom and i watch this movie while we wrap presents. Its her favorite movie and it has become my favorite as well. While we can’t be cuddled up on the couch and watch it, we are planning on doing a socially distance movie night while still wrapping up some gifts.

Shopping Small

Instead of department brands and going shopping at malls, I am shopping mostly online on stores like Etsy that provide personalized items and come from small businesses. I have been getting some great gifts that i can’t wait for my family to open on Christmas!

Zoom Parties

We usually have a big party every year. Instead, we are doing a zoom party. The people who are getting a plate of some party snacks we would have provided so when we zoom we could all be having the same food and drink we might be at a party. It’s going to be a great time!
