Eraserhead

In David Lynch’s “dream of dark and troubling things,” Henry is left alone in his apartment to care for his deformed baby and has a series of strange encounters with the beautiful girl across the hall and the woman living in his radiator.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin and produced and written for the screen by William Peter Blatty, based on the 1971 novel of the same name by Blatty.

The story is about a 12-year-old girl that is possessed by a mysterious entity, and her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her.

Funny Games

Michael Haneke’s most notorious provocation, FUNNY GAMES spares no detail in its depiction of the agony of a bourgeois family held captive at their vacation home by a pair of white-gloved young men.

In a series of escalating “games,” the sadistic duo subject their victims to unspeakable physical and psychological torture over the course of a night. A home-invasion thriller in which the genre’s threat of bloodshed is made stomach-churningly real, the film ratchets up shocks even as its executioners interrupt the action to address the audience, drawing queasy attention to the way that cinema milks pleasure from pain and stokes our appetite for the atrocity.

Nominated for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival

Night of the Living Dead

Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget, by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, directed by horror master George A. Romero, is a great story of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time.

A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role.

Rosemary's Baby

A young woman in NYC fears she is beset by evil during a bizarre pregnancy. As she falls increasingly ill, she grows terrified at the prospect that her outwardly benevolent neighbors aren’t who they appear to be.

The Shining

A writer takes a job as a winter caretaker at an isolated (and haunted) hotel. After he and his family move in for the winter, the hotel’s spirits slowly drive the writer mad.

The Silence of the Lambs

he Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American psychological horror film directed by Jonathan Demme from a screenplay written by Ted Tally, adapted from Thomas Harris’ 1988 novel of the same name.

US

Us is a 2019 American horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele, starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker. The film follows Adelaide Wilson (Nyong’o) and her family, who are attacked by a group of menacing doppelgängers.

Strangers on a Train

Alfred Hitchcock directed this classic suspense tale–widely considered one of the master’s best works–tapping into the evil that lies hidden just beneath the surface of each of us. When two strangers–tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger), whose wife will not grant him a divorce, and wealthy but deranged young Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), who wants to be rid of his father–happen to meet on a train from Washington to New York, the conversation casually turns to a possibly perfect crime: what if each committed murder for the other? There is nothing to connect the two men. No apparent motive for either killing.

When the trip ends, Guy believes the conversation was hypothetical, and that he will never see Bruno again. Then his wife is murdered . . . and Bruno returns for payback. Hard-boiled crime novelist Raymond Chandler co-wrote the screenplay of this film adaptation of the novel by Patricia Highsmith.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

The Ring

A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it.

Eduardo's Top Picks

Now that the best season of the year has finally begun, I think its important to enjoy this time with some spooky films. Although, I have never been one for gore in horror I do quite enjoy some spooky films. Georgina's Top Picks

October is my personal favorite  month because of the change of season! Nights tend to be longer, plenty of beauty from the changing leaves, and it’s the start of the Holiday season.

If you like the spookiness of October, then you will love my Film and TV recommendations for the month. My top movie is Taika Waititi’s film “What We Do in the Shadows.” This is a hilarious mockumentary that follows three Vampires that try to cope with the complexities of a modern life and show a newly turned hipster some of the perks of being undead. Waititi even made a TV series based on the film that is currently available on Hulu. Very funny and spooky stuff, highly recommend!!

Library September Film/TV Picks

September Movie and Television Picks!

Here are some of your librarians favorite movies and television shows that get us into the fall spirit!

Carlee's Top Picks

When I think of fall I think of going back to school, and some of my favorite movies are classics. I try to keep Thriller and Horror movies more for October if I need help getting into the Halloween spirit, but a couple of them will always slip into any list I make. But for Fall, Dead Poets Society by far is my top choice. Its my favorite movie with Robin Williams and I watch it at least once a year.

Dead Poet's Society

Maverick teacher John Keating uses poetry to embolden his boarding school students to new heights of self-expression.

Silence of the Lambs

A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

An urbane fox cannot resist returning to his farm raiding ways and then must help his community survive the farmers’ retaliation.

Here are some other picks from Carlee:

Good Will Hunting

Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Sleepy Hollow

Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people, with the culprit being the legendary apparition, The Headless Horseman.

Eduardo's Top Picks

September is really the start of the spooky season that leads fall into Halloween for me. So I like to sit back and enjoy shows that feature magic and adventure.

Star vs. The Forces of Evil

Star Butterfly arrives on Earth to live with the Diaz, a Mexican-American family. She continues to battle villains throughout the universe and high school, mainly to protect her extremely powerful wand, an object that still confuses her.

Steven Universe

A team of intergalactic warriors fights to protect the universe, but the combination of three highly trained beings and one quirky young boy leaves the team struggling to overcome the dangerous scenarios that are put in front of them.

The Owl House

A teenager finds herself stuck in the Demon Realm and battles the forces of evil alongside a rebellious witch and a pint-sized demon king.

Here are some more picks from Eduardo:

Amphibia

Ordinary Anne Boonchuy, 13, finds a treasure chest that sends her to Amphibia, a world full of frogs, toads, and giant insects. With help from Sprig, she must adjust to life in Amphibia and discover her first true friendship in her life.

Duck Tales

The comedy-adventure series chronicles the high-flying adventures of trillionaire Scrooge McDuck, his grandnephews – Huey, Dewey, and Louie – and temperamental nephew Donald Duck, Launchpad McQuack, Mrs. Beakley, and her granddaughter Webby.

Georgina's Top Picks

It’s back to school season, for some it’s a good thing, for others not so much. Though for me, I enjoyed it mainly because I would go shopping for a new backpack, notebooks, shoes, and (my favorite) art supplies! If you enjoy school-related films and tv shows, you might enjoy my top picks I have chosen for this month of September.

I recently watched Get Duked! (aka Boyz in the Wood), which is a satire and horror British film. The film showcases a generational divide between Boomers and Millennials and the divide between economic classes, but some of this is likely to be lost amidst all the drug and hip-hop jokes. It is a definite must-see film for great visuals effects, along with a great soundtrack!

A TV series that I have been watching recently is The Avatar: The Last Airbender. Great morals and themes all around that makes you feel like a kid again. And don’t forget the steam/diesel-punk sequel, The Legend of Korra! You can learn a lot from the character designs that are influenced by Chinese art and history.

In addition, during these times we are constantly reminded by the inequality that continues in the U.S. and throughout the world. The film Queen and Slim is a story of an African-American couple who kill a racist cop in self-defense and go on the run, and become popular symbols. Now, more than ever, is the time to be empowered and stand up for what is right.

Get Duked!

An anarchic, hip-hop inspired comedy that follows four city boys on a wilderness trek as they try to escape a mysterious huntsman.

Queen & Slim

A couple’s first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over.

Legend of Korra

Avatar Korra fights to keep Republic City safe from the evil forces of both the physical and spiritual worlds.

Here are some other picks from Georgina:

10 Things I Hate About You

A pretty, popular teenager can’t go out on a date until her ill-tempered older sister does. A re-telling of William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.”

Mid90's

Follows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s-era Los Angeles who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.

Avatar Images are graciously provided by Eduardo Chavez. We do not own the movie trailers or movie posters posted here.
