Library September Film/TV Picks

September Movie and Television Picks!

Here are some of your librarians favorite movies and television shows that get us into the fall spirit!

Carlee's Top Picks

When I think of fall I think of going back to school, and some of my favorite movies are classics. I try to keep Thriller and Horror movies more for October if I need help getting into the Halloween spirit, but a couple of them will always slip into any list I make. But for Fall, Dead Poets Society by far is my top choice. Its my favorite movie with Robin Williams and I watch it at least once a year.

Dead Poet's Society

Maverick teacher John Keating uses poetry to embolden his boarding school students to new heights of self-expression.

Silence of the Lambs

A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

An urbane fox cannot resist returning to his farm raiding ways and then must help his community survive the farmers’ retaliation.

Here are some other picks from Carlee:

Good Will Hunting

Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Sleepy Hollow

Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people, with the culprit being the legendary apparition, The Headless Horseman.

Eduardo's Top Picks

September is really the start of the spooky season that leads fall into Halloween for me. So I like to sit back and enjoy shows that feature magic and adventure.

Star vs. The Forces of Evil

Star Butterfly arrives on Earth to live with the Diaz, a Mexican-American family. She continues to battle villains throughout the universe and high school, mainly to protect her extremely powerful wand, an object that still confuses her.

Steven Universe

A team of intergalactic warriors fights to protect the universe, but the combination of three highly trained beings and one quirky young boy leaves the team struggling to overcome the dangerous scenarios that are put in front of them.

The Owl House

A teenager finds herself stuck in the Demon Realm and battles the forces of evil alongside a rebellious witch and a pint-sized demon king.

Here are some more picks from Eduardo:

Amphibia

Ordinary Anne Boonchuy, 13, finds a treasure chest that sends her to Amphibia, a world full of frogs, toads, and giant insects. With help from Sprig, she must adjust to life in Amphibia and discover her first true friendship in her life.

Duck Tales

The comedy-adventure series chronicles the high-flying adventures of trillionaire Scrooge McDuck, his grandnephews – Huey, Dewey, and Louie – and temperamental nephew Donald Duck, Launchpad McQuack, Mrs. Beakley, and her granddaughter Webby.

Georgina's Top Picks

It’s back to school season, for some it’s a good thing, for others not so much. Though for me, I enjoyed it mainly because I would go shopping for a new backpack, notebooks, shoes, and (my favorite) art supplies! If you enjoy school-related films and tv shows, you might enjoy my top picks I have chosen for this month of September.

I recently watched Get Duked! (aka Boyz in the Wood), which is a satire and horror British film. The film showcases a generational divide between Boomers and Millennials and the divide between economic classes, but some of this is likely to be lost amidst all the drug and hip-hop jokes. It is a definite must-see film for great visuals effects, along with a great soundtrack!

A TV series that I have been watching recently is The Avatar: The Last Airbender. Great morals and themes all around that makes you feel like a kid again. And don’t forget the steam/diesel-punk sequel, The Legend of Korra! You can learn a lot from the character designs that are influenced by Chinese art and history.

In addition, during these times we are constantly reminded by the inequality that continues in the U.S. and throughout the world. The film Queen and Slim is a story of an African-American couple who kill a racist cop in self-defense and go on the run, and become popular symbols. Now, more than ever, is the time to be empowered and stand up for what is right.

Get Duked!

An anarchic, hip-hop inspired comedy that follows four city boys on a wilderness trek as they try to escape a mysterious huntsman.

Queen & Slim

A couple’s first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over.

Legend of Korra

Avatar Korra fights to keep Republic City safe from the evil forces of both the physical and spiritual worlds.

Here are some other picks from Georgina:

10 Things I Hate About You

A pretty, popular teenager can’t go out on a date until her ill-tempered older sister does. A re-telling of William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.”

Mid90's

Follows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s-era Los Angeles who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.
