School on Wheels trains and matches volunteer tutors with children experiencing homelessness. Our tutors provide them with a consistent support system at a time of great stress and fear. We tutor virtually, as well as in public locations at libraries, schools, and shelters in six Southern California counties. We offer students new school supplies and backpacks so they feel proud and comfortable at school. The Skid Row Learning Center (SRLC) in downtown Los Angeles is a unique School on Wheels space that offers a safe and fun learning environment where students experiencing homelessness can access support after school. Students are served a meal, after which they rotate between academic stations that include homework, digital learning, and enrichment. Finally, students get some free time to play. We have gaming computers, a large library, a music room with recording equipment, a variety of board games, and an art center. Our SRLC volunteers love being able to both support students academically and engage socially with students to build positive and impactful relationships. A large majority of our students are Spanish speakers. We also have Russian and Portuguese-speaking students. While it is not required to speak another language, volunteers who do speak these languages are highly encouraged to apply!
