August Podcast Spotlight: True Crime

Podcast Highlight: true crime

It’s August which means summer is winding down and schools will be starting up soon. No matter what you are doing – going on a hike, a road trip, or a walk to the store – here are some podcasts in the true crime genre that are both informative and chilling!

Dr. Death

A story about a charming surgeon named Christopher Duntsch, 33 patients and a system that failed to protect them.

It has since three seasons and the first season has been adapted into a mini series with a star studded cast. If you are interested in listening to the podcast and then watching the mini series – or vice versa- this is a great opportunity to do so!

Warning: Contains depictions of violence and malpractice.

Over My Dead Body

From the same network that brings Dr. Death, This podcast is about what happens when people are pushed to their absolute limit.

The first season called Tally, dives into a case about a marriage thats deep foundational cracks cause a lot more damage than just a breakdown of a marriage.

The Second season looks into the strange and dangerous world of Joe Exotic and his feud that would eventually put him in jail. It requires a wondery subscription, but if you enjoy the first season, its worth the price.

Warning: Contains depictions of violence.

Root of Evil

A Look into one of the most infamous unsolved cases in history: The Murder of Elizabeth Short AKA The Black Dahlia. Hosted by two sisters whose great grandfather was George Hodel, the man many consider to be the prime suspect in the case.

With never before heard archival footage and family testimonies, the sisters take a deep dive into their families history.
A companion podcast to TNT’s I Am The Night, its a great addition if you are watching the series or want to learn more about the case.

Warning: Contains depictions of violence, violence against women and mutilation.

My Favorite Murder

One of the most popular True Crime Comedy Podcasts out there. Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark take their love of true crime with their coping mechanism of comedy to a podcast that hits on a myriad of topics. From mental health to recipes while still discussing the worst of humanity, these two women bring a little light to a very dark topic.

Warning: As a True Crime Podcast, there are depictions of violence, assault, drug use and more. Please be mindful when listening.

Darknet Diaries

This podcast intersects technology and true crime. It looks into the seedy side of the cyber world, interviewing hackers, security checkers, and professional analysts, and going in-depth into how some of these cyber criminals are able to disrupt the world in such a profound way with just a click of some keys.

Hosted by Jack Rhysider, This podcast is well researched, interesting, and different than any true crime podcast you will hear. Great for someone who is more interested in the darker parts of the internet and technology.

Unresolved

Having started back in 2015, this incredibly informative, well written, well edited podcast shines a light on the crimes that are still don’t have an outcome – yet.

Host Micheal Whelan goes into delightful detail into mysteries – disappearances, murders, and unexplained phenomena –  and tries to uncover why these stories are still unresolved.

Warning: This is a true crime podcast where depictions of violence and assault are discussed. Please be mindful when listening.
